Victory in Spiritual Warfare Through Prayer

11083625_966469566749484_4867782459189578450_n“When Adam and Eve fell, they relinquished rulership of the earth to Satan, a fallen angelic being. Spiritual warfare is the reversal of that procedure. It is the unseen power encounter between the kingdom of God and the kingdom of darkness. Through prayer, fasting and exercising the authority of Christ and His cross, believers indwelt and empowered by the Holy Spirit are forcing angelic beings to relinquish rulership of the earth!” Eddie and Alice Smith

The enemy does not like intercession because we exercise our authority in Christ when we pray. It is one of the greatest things he will attack. I have been to so many prayer meetings over the years that were stopped or hindered because of enemy attack.

Let us realize that our fight is not against flesh and blood. It is an attack in the spiritual realm and is an unseen power encounter between two kingdoms. The enemy is on an all out attack to stop prayer, because he knows that there is power in intercession. There is power in even one intercessor that knows his/her authority in prayer. Please do not take your prayers and intercession as a small ministry of no importance. The enemy knows full well how mighty you are in pulling down his strongholds, and he will try to intimidate, discourage, divide, or defeat you.

“Doubt. Deception. Discouragement. Division. It’s time for the church to stop accepting these enemy strikes as natural. Spiritual warfare is a reality that the church must face. It won’t go away on its own – but it can be dealt with through prayer.”

Below are ways you can personally maintain victory in spiritual warfare through prayer. I am especially emphasizing warfare in the area of relationships in our lives. This has to do with how we see God, how we see ourselves, and how we see and relate to others. Many times we are blinded to the ways that the enemy is trying to get us. I find that these reminders are extremely helpful when I am under attack. They may seem basic, but they have huge significance and perhaps are the greatest hindrances to the enemy’s success in defeating us.

“The church must do all it can to protect unity and destroy division. A local congregation becomes well prepared to resist the enemy when, finding itself in a conflict, people begin to ask the question, ‘What is the enemy trying to do here?’ Then, turning to the Lord, each asks an even more important question: ‘Lord, how do we counter these attacks of divisiveness against your people?'”

How to Maintain Victory in Warfare

  • Love God with all your heart, and abide in Him – I find that loving God is the most important thing in life. I am personally, by nature, a warrior but my relationship with God is the best antidote against the enemies flaming missiles. We must know God intimately, and abide in that intimacy. “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you” (John 15:7).
  • Know in your heart the sovereignty and greatness of God – Speak out the attributes of God, and praise him daily. Worship is a powerful form of warfare. “Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God” (Philippians 2:9-11).
  • Know your identity in Christ – Your identity in Christ is the enemy’s strategy of attack against you. Know in your heart God’s incredible love for you. You are the beloved of God, a royal priest, the apple of God’s eye, etc. Remind yourself of these things. “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made” (Psalm 139:13-14).
  • Depend on God’s wisdom and not your own – Understand the ways of God, and rely on His sufficiency. “I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better” (Ephesians 1:17).
  • Know God’s Word as your weapons against the enemy’s lies – The Bible is your main defensive, for it is the truth that sets free. Pick up your shield of faith, and protect your mind with the helmet of salvation. Speak out truth and faith. Strongholds come in through the mind, and God’s Word is a mighty weapon against them. “Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:32).
  • Grow in holiness and humility – Humility enables you to receive the grace of God. It is opposite of the enemy. When you are submitted to God, the enemy flees. “Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God – this is your spiritual act of worship” (Romans 12:1).
  • Guard your relationships, and practice peace and love – Know the power of words, and watch your tongue carefully. Speak life words of peace and love rather than death words. Watch all criticism. “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good. Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves” (Romans 12:9-10).
  • Forgive quickly, and walk in unity – Learn to forgive quickly, and bless others. We can have no authority over a nation, city, or area when we have unforgiveness in our hearts. Release forgiveness and blessings to all. “Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave you. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them together in perfect unity” (Colossians 3:13-14).
  • Grow in the area of prayer and fasting – Learn to exercise the authority you have in Christ. Extended times in prayer and fasting increase spiritual authority. You are seated with Christ.
“And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:6).

The uniting and training of intercessors will have a dramatic effect in bringing in the world harvest. It is as we unite together that God can bring great breakthrough against the powers of darkness. Each of us need others to pray for us personally as we are involved in the ministry of intercession. Let we pray the above for all intercessors and their churches. It would even a greater benefit to you personally if you would memorize these verses. Additional verses to study about spiritual warfare are in Ephesians 6:10-20.

The real danger for us is not the enemy’s schemes, but being unaware of them – and thus, unprotected from them. We tend to approach difficulties in the church as though they are ‘natural’ things. But when churches divide over whether to use hymns or contemporary choruses, it’s not natural. When a flock turns on its shepherd, it’s not natural. When saints, called to live in love and peace, spend their time criticizing and accusing one another, it’s not natural. The devil has come to church.” Unnamed quotes by David Butts

Strategic Joy in the Midst of Warfare

11351336_964567213606386_5770670982150967644_n-2“Joy and gladness are the currency on which heaven runs… Joy is deep-rooted happiness in the presence, person and nature of God. It sits in our heart and directs our life, displacing grief, mourning and sadness. When we have a quiet, God-given joy bubbling up inside us, the negative is pushed out.” Graham Cooke

Living strategically in the end times is a key to victory. The strategy of the enemy is to steal your joy. God’s strategy is that we are joyful in the midst of spiritual warfare. This may seem quite difficult when facing hard, strenuous battles. I went through some difficult warfare when praying towards and pressing through in battle to get books on prayer published,  new prayer websites up and running, and an International School of Prayer developed. There seemed to be no forward movement, and anything to do with prayer faced the greatest spiritual attacks. I knew this. Yet the enemy really tried to bring discouragement into my life. Along with this was a battle  with my health. But God is greater, and there was another way of looking at all of this. We have the hope and reality of heaven! It is time we bring the joy of heaven to earth.

Joy is our strategy against the works of the devil.

“Heaven is a place of exuberance, and we must bring that enthusiasm to earth. All of heaven – the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit, the angels, the saints – they all love to rejoice. Everything that God makes and touches manifests His happiness. It is embedded into our DNA.” Graham Cooke

God began to speak strongly to my heart. He was saying, “Do not despair or give up.” At that point, I realized that the enemy wanted to invade my life with a spirit of discouragement and despair, but God wanted to give me joy. I began to study about joy.

Did you know that there are nearly 300 verses in the Bible about joy? The Bible commands us to be joyful always, and pray continually (1 Thessalonians 5:16), to be joyful in God (Hebrews 3:18), to consider it pure joy when we encounter trials (James 1:2), to tell of God’s works with songs of joy (Psalm 107:22), and the list goes on and on. Joy is a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22), there is joy in God’s presence (Acts 2:28), and the Holy Spirit gives joy (Luke 10:21). God wants to anoint us with the oil of joy (Hebrews 1:9), and He wants us to pray with joy (Philippians 1:4). Throughout Scripture, we are exhorted to shout and sing for joy (Psalm 118:15, Isaiah 52:9). Even the heavens, the earth, the mountains and trees are commanded to sing for joy! We are called to a high quality of life that includes joy in the midst of difficult circumstances.

“We are called to this same thriving quality of life, that no matter our circumstances, we live in the promise of God’s joy. It is impossible to keep God from being happy, and because of that, His Church cannot be denied joy either. Sadness and grief can only overlay our joy; it cannot prevent a breakthrough into it. We may have to look hard on days for that cheerfulness, but it is always present in the heart of God. Sadness must be infiltrated by joy.” Graham Cooke

Why then do we sometimes get heavy-hearted? We are in spiritual warfare, and Satan hates prayer so strongly. He doesn’t mind when we do many other ”good” things, but he trembles when we pray. He actually attacks us with a spirit of despair or discouragement. He will do everything he can to stop the advance of the prayer movement.

When a heavy weight of discouragement threatens to overwhelm you, and if there is no known sin in your life, you can be sure that the enemy is attacking you with a spirit of despair or discouragement. When you pray against the spirit of despair in your life, it can lift. I pray for each one of you to know the joy of the Lord which is your strength, and that every trace of discouragement or despair is lifted from your life in Jesus’ Name. I pray that the stronghold of hopelessness will be broken in the Name of Jesus. I pray that the joy of the Lord will permeate your prayer life and everything that you do.

God does not want you to be disheartened but He longs to fill you with His joy. He has anointed you to help others who are going through difficulty, and to actually bestow the oil of gladness, joy and praise on those who have a spirit of despair. This is the job description of Jesus. We are to be like Jesus.

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom to the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners… to comfort all who mourn, and provide for those who grieve in Zion – to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair” (Isaiah 61:1, 2b-3).

A few years ago when we lived in Virginia Beach, we had tropical storm Ernesto pass through our city. Rain was pouring down, the streets were flooded, and clouds and wind were everywhere. People were told to stay in their homes due to the flooding. It was hard to imagine sunshine in the midst of the storm. On a flight, I experienced the plane flying through many clouds on the right and the left as it was ascending. Suddenly the plane came out into the sunshine above all the threatening clouds.

Circumstances can be like both of these examples. Heaviness and darkness can invade our lives because of what is happening around us, when we can’t see past the clouds and trials, and the devil takes the opportunity to attack us with a spirit of discouragement or despair. This is when we must rise above the clouds, and see life from God’s perspective and vantage point through His Word. The sunshine will one day return. We do not have to live in gloom or despair. God has provided a way out.

If you are feeling down and can’t seem to get out of it, take the authority in prayer that is rightfully yours, and break that discouragement in Jesus’ Name. Then ask God to fill you with His joy and peace. Write down the positive things in your life, and thank God for each one of them. God is able to push the negatives out as we begin to praise Him and dwell on the positive things that God has provided for us.

Don’t live your life according to your earthly circumstances but according to your position in Christ. Remember that you are seated in heavenly places (Ephesians 1:3-6), are God’s possession (Ephesians 1:14), are chosen of God (Ephesians 1:11), are complete in Him (Colossians 2:9-10), are a kingdom of priests and a royal priesthood (Revelation 1:6, I Peter 2:9), are the temple of God (1 Corinthians 3:16), are a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17) and are able to do all things through Christ (Philippians 4:13).

Strategic joy in the midst of warfare is yours. This is how you will live victoriously. This is your birthright!

“Don’t deny yourself that which is your birthright as a child of God. Don’t be satisfied with a joyless life. There ought to be in every Christian a deep, settled fullness of the joy of Christ that no circumstance of life can dispel. This comes as you allow the Holy Spirit to express Himself in your life. One of the fruits of the Spirit is joy (Gal. 5:22). This joy is unlike any happiness that is produced by the world. It fills you and permeates everything you do. Jesus did not pray that you would merely be happy or even that you would escape grief. He prayed that you would have the same joy that the Father had given Him: a divine joy, a joy that comes from a deep and unwavering relationship with the Father. It is a joy that is grounded so firmly in a relationship with God that no change in circumstances could ever shake it. This is the kind of joy that Christ is praying will be in you.” Henry Blackaby

Practical Wisdom to Apply in the Prayer Room

11709522_990326201030487_2695539852316010783_n

“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation so that you may know him better. I pray also that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints, and his incomparably great power to us who believe.” (Ephesians 1:17-19a)

  • Pray specific Scripture – God’s Word is filled with wisdom and so you can pray through most Scripture. I highly recommend the book called Praying the Bible by Wesley and Stacey Campbell.
  • Pray the promises of Scripture – Claim God’s promises in Scripture over your city, church and families. God’s Word will not return void. When you pray God’s promises over your family, neighborhood or nation, you are planting seeds of God’s Word that will eventually grow and produce a harvest.
  • Pray the apostolic prayers – The  apostolic prayers are prayers that we should pray over and over again. Some good apostolic prayers are: Acts 4:24-31, Ephesians 1:15-20, 3:14-21, 6:18-20, Philippians 1:3-6, 9-11, Colossians 1:2-6, 4:2-4, 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13, 5:23-25, 2 Thessalonians 1:1-3, Titus 2:11-13, Jude 24-25.
  • Pray for revival in your church, city and nation – It is wise to bathe your area in prayer for revival. This releases God’s Spirit in the city.
  • Pray for things that are familiar with others in your geographical area – Pray for the needs in your area that are common to those in the prayer meeting. People can best agree in prayer over common concerns in the city.
  • Don’t pray long prayers – Realize that 3-5 minute prayers are long enough. In a corporate prayer meeting, you want many to be involved. When one person dominates the prayer room, others who desire to pray can feel frustrated.
  • Don’t inform God or others of the details of specific circumstances – God know the circumstances and others do not need to be informed.
  • Don’t teach or preach to others in your prayers – Always remember that you are praying to God and not others. Concentrate on Him, seek His face. Pray to Him directly.

“Knowing God and having Him reside within you is a treasure of infinite value. Jesus likened this value to that of a perfect pearl. The collector would readily sell everything he had in order to possess this one matchless pearl (Matthew 13:45-46). Your relationship with God places an immeasurable value on your life. The treasure of God’s wisdom and knowledge are available to you through Christ (Col. 2:2-3). His love now fills you. His incomprehensible peace surrounds your heart and mind (Phil. 4:7). When Jesus dwells in your life, everything available to Christ dwells within you (Eph. 3:19). Don’t focus on outward appearances and physical strength, for these deteriorate. Rather, allow the Holy Spirit to convince you of the infinite treasure that is within you because of God’s presence.” Henry Blackaby

Eye Surgery for a Kingdom Focus

11167807_963508270378947_6983078935032374170_n
My husband and I went for a free vision exam. The advertisement made a lot of amazing claims just as they so often do. It said the doctors were skilled with extensive experience in advanced diagnostic equipment, the procedure rooms were specially designed for optimal results, the technology used was the best with complete follow-up care and affordable prices! We had thought we were going for a normal eye exam only to discover that the doctor was examining us for laser surgery. Because of the fancy advertisement, the place was packed with people wanting to improve their vision through free laser surgery.

While we were waiting, I noticed a group of patients gathered around a big window intently watching something very interesting in the next room. I walked over and to my surprise, they were watching a live laser surgery being done on one of the patients! It took only about ten minutes to complete this surgery that provided a vast improvement of one’s vision, even with those who had been wearing bifocal glasses for years and years.

I was fascinated as I watched the doctor wash the eye with a solution and know exactly how to do what seemed like a simple surgery on the eye. I am sure it was much more complex than I imagined. Then he would wash the eye again, and I would see magnified a beautifully colored and designed eye so unique and carefully created by God. It was an amazing surgery that impressed me greatly.

God is doing eye surgery right now on the body of Christ. He wants us to see with His vision. He is a skilled physician with the very best equipment, and He has the greatest experience of anyone in the entire world! His technology is supernatural, and He provides daily follow-up and personal care. God wants to remove our shortsightedness and the cataracts that fog our vision. He wants us to see through eyes of faith what He can do in our cities and nations. He wants to put his own eye salve on our eyes so we can see brilliantly what is before us and how we are to pray.

While on a prayer journey in the Biblical city of Laodicea in Turkey, I was reminded of God’s message to the Laodicean church. God wants us to be willing to go through His refinement so that we are not lukewarm and naked like the Laodicean church but, instead, are on fire for Him. He says to the church in Laodicea in Revelation 3:18:

“I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful naked-ness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.”

I didn’t qualify for lazer surgery, but I am glad that I do qualify for God’s surgery that opens my eyes further to see from His glorious perspective! You qualify as well. I encourage you to begin to see your city from God’s Kingdom perspective. Think about starting 24/7 in your city for a week or a month. Think about the Kingdom of God invading your city.

We sometimes do one-month Houses of Prayer. When we do this in cities for a month, it changes so many of our lives! Time in God’s presence changes you dramatically just as it did Michael’s family. Perhaps you are thinking:

“But you don’t know my nation – the church is too small or too divided!

God doesn’t need a large population of Christians in order to bring in His presence. He will work through a few churches that decide to unite in prayer in order to seek His presence for their city. This is where He loves to show His presence. When we had a one-month House of Prayer in Spain, we had only 12-15 committed churches.

A City with a Kingdom Vision

11222483_964569090272865_1684246959358965919_n-2“God’s kingdom, when it comes, probably won’t arrive in the way we expect or even want it to. But viewing history with the eyes of faith, through the grid of past prayer movements, we can easily see the correlation between seasons of intercession and the extension of God’s kingdom in the world.”

What will your city look like when it has a Kingdom vision and focus?
How will it be different than it is right now? Notice the abundant prosperity that God brings to the city in Jeremiah 33:9:

“Then this city will bring me renown, joy, praise and honor before all nations on earth that hear of all the good things I do for it; and they will be in awe and will tremble at the abundant prosperity and peace I provide for it.”

When the believers in a city have a kingdom vision and begin to pray together with eyes of faith, several dramatic changes take place:

  • Trust – A new level of trust is developed between believers of different backgrounds. Suspicion is gone. There is the realization that we need one another to reach our city.
  • The wisdom of God – The Christians begin seeking heaven’s perspective for their city and heaven’s agenda. They begin seeking the mind of Christ and the wisdom of God for their city.
  • Relational unity – The city church begins to want deeper fellowship with other churches. This unity is much deeper than a unity based on an event. It is true friendship.
  • Transformation – The believers seek for God to transform their city and revive the city church. They then bring the revival fire into the streets and community. The church begins to influence the city.
  • Lovers and worshippers of God – The church becomes a lover of God instead of just a worker for God. They learn to worship God out of intimate fellowship. This pushes out the powers of darkness.
  • Kingdom building – There is a willingness to lay down personal agendas and work towards building God’s purposes. The church begins to see the big picture of what God wants to do in the city.
  • Presence of God – There begins to be more emphasis upon waiting on God. The presence of God replaces man-made fleshly ideas, programs, and methods.
  • Learners of simplicity – The church learns the power and wisdom of simplicity. The way God works is not through a highly intellectual, organized, and complicated program. He works through simplicity.

This is what we must prayer towards. When we had our first one-month 24/7 House of Prayer in southern Spain in 2006, we only started to taste what God wanted for the city. The taste made us desperately hungry for more. It was life changing, and I don’t think any of us could say that we want to go back to the old way. We had just begun to taste what God wanted for the Campo de Gibraltar area. A Kingdom vision was born. But there is so much more.

God is giving incredible grace for prayer at this hour. This vision is spreading far and wide, and we will soon be captured in a movement of prayer and a hunger for His presence that is unstoppable. All over the world there is beginning to be a desperate cry for fervent prayer. Let’s discover how to prepare the way for God’s presence and Kingdom by learning to pray together with churches in our area for extended period of time.

Pray through the above list over and over again for your city. See with eyes of faith what God wants to do. Cry out for Him to ignite a Kingdom vision in your city. The hour calls for it. Your city desperately needs God’s presence. His vision is life changing!

“Without a vision, people are doomed to live mediocre lives, carried along by social influences and self-centered interests. The Bible says, ‘Where there is no vision, the people perish’ (Proverbs 28:18 KJV). Our own vision for our lives cannot sustain us; we must have a vision that originates from the heart of God, from His very throne room. His vision is life-giving, life-changing, and worth abandoning our hearts and lives to.”

More Faith Power Please God! (children’s story)

11295609_965501846846256_8820776121841191577_n-2One day Jesus and his disciples were crossing a lake in a boat. Jesus was tired out after his long day teaching the crowds so he went down below deck to lie down and rest, but he soon fell asleep.

A mighty storm started to blow up across the lake. Huge waves came over the sides of the boat and it began to fill with water and sink.

Jesus disciples and everyone else on the boat started to panic. They went down below to wake Jesus up. “Save us master,” they begged Jesus, “We are all going to drown!”

Instead of being worried about his disciples however, Jesus got angry with them. “Why are you such cowards” he asked them? “You have seen me perform lots of miracles, yet you can’t even believe that you will be safe in a storm. Why do you have so little faith?” He demanded to know. Then Jesus went up on deck and told the sea to be still and the wind to calm down. The men were so astonished that the sea and the wind obeyed Jesus (Matthew 8, 18-27).

Jesus gave his disciples a huge ‘telling off’ several times for their lack of faith. When they asked him to give them more faith so that they could believe lots more things about Jesus, he told them that if they had faith the size of a tiny little mustard seed (and that’s really tiny), they could say to a mountain to move, and it would move. (Matthew 17 v20)……….. Wow!!!!!

It certainly is very difficult to believe in something that you cannot see. It takes faith to believe that God is real and that He sent his son Jesus to die for us on a cross. (John 3 v 16) Jesus tells us not to worry about having a lack of faith. He says that we can ask (pray to) God to give us more faith. Just like the disciples, we also forget the power of God and that He has offered us this power to use wisely to help other people. The way we get our ‘healing faith power’ is through believing and asking. Remember that Jesus was always healing the sick and performing miracles and he has said that we should follow his example. If you think that you can’t pray and heal someone through the power of God, then you won’t be able to heal them. That’s not good if it is something that you would really like to do though!!!

So, let’s see! When people in the bible with strong faith asked God for something what happened?

A man called Jabez (1 Chronicles 4, 10) cried out to God to increase his wealth and possessions, and God answered his request. Jabez had lots of faith to believe that God could give him all that he wanted, and God did! When Peter wanted to walk on the water to get to Jesus, Peter could do it. But the minute Peter started to doubt that he could, he began to sink! When Paul turned his life around and began to believe and have faith in Jesus, he travelled all over the Mediterranean telling people about Jesus and that he was God’s son. This is how the church as we know it today began.

Without Paul’s powerful faith that other people would believe that what he said about Jesus and God was true, Paul would have stayed at home and we would never have known anything about God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and Heaven. We would never have had the opportunity to believe in Jesus and have eternal life (life for ever in Heaven with God).

Did you know that we can change people’s lives by praying for them in powerful faith? That is, we can ask God to give us lots of faith, or lots more faith, so that when we believe that something will, or we pray for something to, happen, God rewards our powerful faith by making it happen!

Just think of all those powerful faith prayers you could pray today! Think of all those amazing people that you could heal, and you could also help them to believe in Jesus and our Father God so that they too could have eternal life.

Powerful prayers shouldn’t just be a ‘maybe I will have a try’. We must learn to pray powerful prayers all the time! We must have faith that God will join in our prayers and make them happen!

This is an example of a Powerful Faith Prayer:

Dear Lord Jesus,

Please give me lots of powerful faith so that I can move a mountain if I need too, and right now, please heal my very sick uncle Bill! I believe that you will! Amen.

Don’t give up if at first your prayers don’t appear to get answered! Just keep asking our father God for more faith to believe that they will!!!
